~ Suicide ~
Awareness & Resources
We are inundated by all the murders taking place in America. Scrolling through the news daily, you are bound to come across a recent murder, a trial, some sort of discussion concerning murder. How often to you scroll through your newspaper of news feed and come across articles about suicide? I venture to say rarely to never, unless it is concerning a high profile celebrity. In reality more then 1000+ people attempt suicide daily with 125 completing it. The center for disease report there are annually 17,000 murders, 38,000 auto fatalities, and 45,000 suicides. . There are three times (3x) more suicides than homicides, yet you rarely see it reported in the news. WHY? we have continued to rise in the U.S. and yet it is not discussed. WHY? STIGMA! Tabu! For reasons we will go far more into depths with over time , the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health has created a dangerous and deadly environment for suicide to SILENTLY THRIVE. We as individuals and as a society have to change the way we treat mental illness and the way we treat the people who suffer with it. Until we decide to address the elephant in the room, we are also apart of the problem. This starts with us, every single one of us. We can do better, we HAVE to do better. If 45,000 people were losing their life annually to any other illness, we would be taken serious action as a country to cure it, yet here we are. Silent!
Every day 20 US service men and veterans die by suicide.
Every day, approximately 123 Americans die by suicide (CDC)
Suicide takes the lives of over 44,965 American every year. (CDC)
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year old Americans. (CDC)
Our mission at CWC is to courageously crusade for those who have lost their battle to suicide, and crusade for change for those battling now. We are dedicated to TALKING about suicide and mental health in a healthy and productive way. That last sentence may have left you feeling uncomfortable. That is okay. The more one educates themselves, the easy the conversations become. We cannot except stigma surrounding mental illness any longer, or allowing it to live in silence. It is in that silence that the darkness has become powerful. Talking about mental health in an appropriate and compassionate way, encourages people to seek help. Together, we can work to stop the stigma surrounding mental health many of us face!
